Participate

The Memory Dynamics Lab is recruiting individuals interested in participating in future research studies. Participants are either paid for their time or receive course credit (PSY141). Our experiments typically fall into three categories:

  1. Behavioral (participants complete the experiment in front of a computer across one or more experiment sessions)
  2. EEG (as above, but participants additionally wear a head cap designed to record their brainwaves as they’re completing the experiment)
  3. Sleep (participants are asked to perform certain tasks before/after an interval of sleep–ranging from a full night of sleep to a short nap; this type of study may or may not involve EEG recording, as above)

Depending on the particular study, eligibility requirements for participants vary. In most cases, we are only approved to invite the participation of individuals who meet all of the following basic attributes:

  • 18-35 years of age
  • Native English speaker (here defined as having been exposed to English regularly since early childhood)
  • Normal or corrected-to-normal (glasses/contacts) color vision
  • Neurologically healthy (e.g., no history of head trauma/concussions/seizures/stroke/brain tumors/brain surgery)
  • Not diagnosed with an attention deficit (e.g., ADD) or learning disability (e.g., dyslexia)
  • Get a full night of sleep the night(s) before their experiment session(s)

EEG studies further require that participants:

  • Are able to take out any braids in hair/jewelry from face/ears before the experiment
  • Don’t mind getting some gel in their hair (facilities are available to wash out the gel after the experiment)
  • Typically don’t blink excessively
  • Have no problem sitting relatively still for extended periods

Sleep studies further require that participants:

  • Not suffer from sleep disturbances (insomnia, apnea, sleepwalking, narcolepsy, etc.)
  • Are not currently or regularly taking sleep aids
  • Follow a regular sleep schedule and typically get 7+ hours of sleep per night
  • Can easily nap (if the study involves naps) in new environments

If you are interested in participating after considering all of the above, please feel free to complete the below form and we’ll let you know if there is an experiment for which you might be eligible:

A Place to Think

Lab Mission

The Memory Dynamics Lab, part of the Psychology Program at Bard College, works to harness the mechanisms responsible for adaptively retrieving, consolidating, and forgetting memories through cognitive neuroscience (including the study of human brainwaves and behavior while awake and asleep). In doing so, we aim to distill and disseminate strategies designed to help learners capitalize on these mental operations, allowing them to better remember when/what they want to remember and forget when/what they want to forget.
